Backend Engineer Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to design and build the systems that power our product. You will architect and implement scalable APIs, data pipelines, and microservices, ensuring reliability, performance, and security. You thrive working on complex technical challenges and take ownership of systems from design through to production.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable, reliable, and secure backend services and APIs
• Build and maintain data models, schemas, and database query optimizations
• Collaborate with frontend engineers to define and deliver clean API contracts
• Ensure system reliability through monitoring, alerting, and on-call participation
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across the backend stack
• Write technical specifications and contribute to architecture reviews
• Implement security best practices across authentication, authorization, and data handling
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation

Requirements

• 4+ years of backend software development experience
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Go, Java, Node.js, or similar)
• Strong experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles and best practices
• Experience with microservices or service-oriented architectures
• Understanding of authentication protocols (OAuth2, JWT)
• Familiarity with message queues and async processing patterns

Nice to Have

• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Knowledge of GraphQL
• Experience with high-traffic, distributed systems
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Pulumi)
